Hello all,

I am new to the forum and new to 8/81 rifles.

Mine is in .35 Rem and I would like to take it down fully for a cleaning. My experience with Browning A5s tells me that these rifles most likely never get fully taken down and it probably needs it.

So where do you all get your spanner wrenches to take the barrel down?

Reproductions are no longer being manufactured, so you may do a search on our forums for homemade tool ideas or you can use a Winchester Winchoke wrench, preferably the one with the wooden handle.

How well does that Winchoke tool work? I'd like to disassemble the barrel ends of both of my 81s, but really don't want to booger up the bushing. I'd just like to get in and clean it all up and lube everything. Probably won't need to do that all that often from what I gather.

They work OK. I don't see them working well for a poorly cared for rifle with a seized up barrel nut or really tight one.

I used the drilled socket on a 1924 that I know hadn't been apart for over 40 years. Find a socket that fits over the barrel nut then find the drill bit that the smooth side fits the spanner hole. Drill the socket the right height then use the back side of the drill bit for the pin it's hardened so it won't bend but might break.
