I am wondering what the "G" is above the serial number? It's a Grade "D" and I don't find any references. Thank You.

Sweet engraved model!
Perhaps it's a workers stamp, maybe even a request to have an initial under special order?
One thing I do know is that the engraving is on the extra side for a D grade "the examples I've seen didn't have that much on the underside".

I hadn't thought of an initial! The GS where I stole - I mean bought it, thought it was a model G and couldn't find it in their book. It has extra engraving on the magazine too:

Hibby83:
One last discovery. I was searching the "G" engraving tie-in and I found this Rem Model 10D, engraved by Wilbur Glahn, around the same time as my M8D. It's interesting that the treatment of the Serial Number area is essentially the same. The arrows, the simple scrolls with the punch dot accents. While I don't know what the "initial" is on the M10, I'm going to say that my "G" stands for Glahn. Nobody is going to pay attention, anyway, and I'll get a kick out of it. Wayne

Inspector/fitter stamps. Just more elegantly applied and in prettier font than your average "A" grades!
