Remington model 8 with no caliber marked.

How common are Model 8’s without the caliber being marked on the gun and WHY?
I have run across a few and just recently someone was asking on another site why.

My father saw one "Model 8" at a show that didn't have a caliber marking. The seller claimed it was .32.
This was the spring of 2019 in Pennsylvania.
I wasnt there that day to see if it may have been ground off or???
I havent seen any on the internet that dont bear the markings.
