What are the two holes in the butt of the stock supposed to do? Did firing pins or a barrel spanner wrench come with it? Or are the holes to lighten up the gun?
I found firing pins in two of my fleet. The 60xxx had a firing pin wrapped in a piece of June 15, 1942 newspaper. The 45xxx had a firing pin wrapped in oiled gun cotton and then wrapped in waxed paper tied neatly with string.
Shoot Straight!

As far as I know, the holes were just to lighten the stock.
Those are pretty cool (and usefull!) finds in your guns.
I've never found anything in my Model 8s, but found this in one of my 1907 Winchesters....

I believe they were just for cutting some weight. Model 81's did not have these two holes.
Canuk, that is awesome!

The holes were just for weight reduction, but owners over the years have filled them with what nots. One M 81 I had had a firing pi and stamped in the wood," 1956 to factory for new pin" and the owners name. Another had a canceled elk tag, in a 30!
