looking to become a Remington 81 owner
looking to become a Remington 81 owner
hello all, I am looking at a Remington Model 81 300 savage at an auction, and am wondering about the going price for this firearm. looks to be in good shape, have only seen a picture of it. Is there a good way to tell the age of these firearms? They are listing the serial number as #5857 , from the research I have done this doesn't make sense, because the serial number places it as a 1938, and the savage wasn't introduced until 1940. any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a fantastic site and I have learned a great deal in the few moments I have spent on this site. Thanks Jeff

Hey Jeff,
Welcome aboard. It is good to get new members who have found out about these great rifles. It would be my guess that the original owner of this rifle may have sent it back to the factory for a barrel change. If you check the codes on the barrel, this may help to tell you when the factory change was made. The other thing that often happens, is the change could have been made by a good gunsmith or maybe by the owner. My guess is the rifle was probably manufactured as a .35 and then it was converted.
Good luck and if you can get some pictures, post them for the rest of us to see.
