The Ultimate Model 8 Barrel Tool ***

Over the many years of collecting, shooting, and servicing Model 8 & 81's, I've amassed a decent assortment of barrel disassembly tools. Some of them homemade, some of them limited runs, some of them high quality factory reproductions, but this weekend I found the ultimate tool that's now my "go-to". That tool is the one built by forum member 1913Model8 (TJ).
When my "Master Kit" arrived, I told TJ that this is as much a work of art, as it is a tool. It's a beautiful piece of engineering & machining. My photos do not do the tool justice. I'll spare everyone the disassembly / reassembly process as TJ has a great instruction guide on his website I'll link.
I've seen many barrel nut and jacket bushings damaged over the years (you see these often in auction photos too) from disassembly attempts using improper fitting tools. And I get questions all the time about "which tool should I use" or "where to buy a tool" and historically I've referred them to ones on gunbroker or a forum post on how to make one. But, if you're looking for the highest quality tool for your beloved 8 or 81, TJ's is worth every penny.

81police,
Thank you so much for this fantastic review. We are taking great pride in making these tools. They are not a 1 hour job either, these are up to 8 hours a piece for everything depending on what you order. Labor of love and passion for these are what keeps the oil burning. We want everyone to have a quality piece that you can consider as art. wether you use it just as a tool for your work horse or use it as a display piece for a high collection, we want to make sure you are getting a solid piece of industrial design. It means the world to us that you have the interest in this tool. We wish many many years of easy recoil system servicing on all those Model 8 and 81's.

I backed out of the initial offering because of the US/kanada exchange rate but now my mouth is watering again
Are you still willing to ship north of 49 TJ ?
It would have to go USPS or I'd have to back off again

Well of course we can do that. Do you need a quote on shipping? If so I suggest you visit my site and email me through there and we can get the ball rolling. Thank you for all the years here on being supportive and helping me out too with dimensions. I just updated the website last night LATE

The revised or update to the Model 3 design is a Taper Pin vs a roll pin design which anchors in the Pilot Shafts into the main body of the tool. Much nicer looking, less hammering, less fiddling, easier to install. We are making another batch of Pilot Shafts as we are low on those and just issued a recall on .32 Pilots Shafts as they were way off. I have 9 tool bodies ready to go for order at the moment.

I just used mine today to disassemble my 1924 Model 8. Some parts were frozen and took some convincing but, with a little Kroil and heat plus some perseverance the old girl came apart with NO damage to any parts. Well designed tool and a piece of art. I couldn't be happier!

Hey all!
It has been over a year since I've been around. Sometimes, "real life" just happens to us all! In the meantime, I just discovered that the FN barrel disassembly tool had finally been replicated - and guess what I just did?
You know it! Ordered the kit immediately! Got it in the base 30/300 and ordered a 35 for my 35 caliber guns.
I will be back - currently working ever so slowly to restore the June 1945 Model 81 Krieger rifle I have.
Take care - and I'm really looking forward to this new Model 8/81 tool!
Adam

Hey Adam, It’s great to hear from you again. At my age, a lot of my old friends are gone now. I still have a couple different barrel tools, and don’t shoot much now anyway. I guess I don’t have the need to buy a new tool, but if I did I wouldn’t hesitate to add this one to my collection.
Take care my old friend,
Roger

Morning Roger!
Good to hear from you, as well! You know, the closer I have been getting to my own retirement (still 3 or maybe 4 years away, not precisely sure) the busier I have become at my job. Teaching Kindergarten is working with busy little people all the time!
I am glad to hear that you and some of the other guys are still around. I still have that Frankenrifle I bought from you years ago - the Model 8 mixmaster. I refinished it at one point, then I took it all apart again - for reasons I do not know. The stocks sure look nice after I refinished them!
But now my focus has veered towards getting my 1945 Krieger up and running, now that I have the elusive magazine. It is a challenge. For one, the barrel is bad - about 3 inches away from the chamber, an apparent "squib" or overpressure load at some point left a burst area - like a ring was blasted out of the bore from the inside - that is hard to notice externally. So that 300 Savage bore is no good. Been looking for another 300 or even a nice 35 Remington to swap. But I digress!
Hope things are going well for you in Iowa. Here in Alexandria, VA, the weather has been the usual summer weather in VA. Hot, super humid. Not sure if you recall, but I did mention at some point my mom and her side of the family was originally from Charles City, IA, home of the Oliver tractor!
All right, take care Roger. Once I get that new barrel tool, I will share pics!
Adam

Hey all, I got the new tool and it is great! Just a brief note and here is a pic from the barrel disassembled.
Particular rifle I used was my 1948 Model 81 in .300 Savage. Disassembled fine with the new tool set. Recommend this to every owner of an 8 or 81 so you stop ruining the barrel cap nut piece!
Be well

Update: 10-14-25
I have 8 tools on hand right now, and I have 2 people on a list that I have not heard from in quite a few days. You can make your purchase at the website or on eBay. Note that it always will be more of a cost on eBay due to their fees.
