Happend to find this one at a Local Bass Pro Shop, late 1950 vintage on .300 Savage. They also had one in .30 Remington but I opted for something I can still find ammo for. Plain, but very nice shape. The magazine indicaotr was not positioned correctly, but I fixed that. Currently having some issues with fired cases not staying in the extractor, so working through that. Looks like it was maybe drilled for a Williams FP-81? Can anyone confirm? Hole spacing is 1". I'd like to get whatever peep sight this was drilled for but want to make sure I'm getting the right one LOL.

What a score. The bluing looks great on the rifle. Just curious how much they wanted for the .30 Rem? I am sure that Hibby or Police 81 will have some good info for you. Again Fantastic find!

You are correct on the peep. Good looking gun!

Does the extractor have a number stamp on the front face?

Thanks for confirmation on the peep! Now just need to find one!

And yes, that's the .30 Remington one they have at Bass Pro in Auburn Hills. I couldn't believe they had 2 Model 81's LOL. Gotta love Club Member Mondays and points!

The .300 Sav that I bought has a "35" on the extractor...it is my understanding that the 35 Rem and .300 Sav used the same extractor, right? I disassembled for cleaning when I first got it, found the bolt return spring was broken (and turns out was a lot shorter too, like it was missing a section). Got it all back together (magazine indicator properly positioned), lubed it, took it out to the range. Out of a box of 20 factory Federal rounds, I think I only got it to properly cycle consecutive rounds maybe 3 times? I'd chamber & fire the first round, and the spent casing would just be laying there and the bolt would jam into it.

Took some slo-mo video...the bolt & barrel comes all the way rearward, bolt locks back, barrel comes forward and the empty is just laying there, not held by the extractor. Took the bolt out and the ejector seems to be moving freely but firmly. Ran a cleaning brush with solvent lightly in a drill in the chamber to clean it up a bit, disassembled the bolt for a thorough cleaning (wasn't bad), didn't see any obvious broken/chipped areas on the extractor. Sourced an extractor from ebay listed as "new" for 35 Rem...thought it was missing the 35 stamp, but it's very faint. Also will need to be fitted since it doesn't just slide in...tabs are slightly thicker than the orginal extractor. Put it all back together just to see if the chamber cleaning (and repalcement bolt link) would do the trick, cycled by hand and worked ok (I know it's not the same as live fire). Took it to the range, same thing happened. Next step is trying to clean the chamber up some more and maybe trying to adjust the original extractor tension a little bit. (Trying to avoid fitting that replacement extrator LOL). Any other suggestions, or advice on adjusting the extractor tension? I assume it's similar to a 1911 extractor adjustment.

Thanks!

The home page has more to offer than most would think. The link above is a "Factory Service Manual."

I have had luck correcting extraction faults with the method mentioned in the manual. With extractor removed- I took the extractor over a hard 90 degree corner and would attempt to bend the front downward, perhaps* a round dowel would be better. This is hard steel, and I couldn't see a physical change in the shape. Upon reinstalling the extractor my issue was no more.

Advisory- be careful not to bend too much. Best i can offer is plan on trying this a few times, over trying to bend* once, and be done.

Safety first, not everyone feels comfortable cycling live rounds through a rifle in their house, snap caps are a safer option. More times than not my fixes have been noticeable with running the bolt like* the rifle is firing "swiftly pulling back bolt and letting go."

Good luck with the fix ottergt.

I do believe that the guy on eBay I found, who is making the recoil springs, actually makes or repairs the extractors for 8 and 81's.
Message him, and I am sure he will respond quickly about what to do.
Hibby is right, the main menu has basically all the info you will need in the service manual, and how to diagnose.
